3 Keys to Building a Successful Commercial Voiceover Audition

What’s the purpose of the spot? Most often a commercial is demonstrating something people want. What is that?

  1. Identify and establish a proper tone for the read. Is this a high-energy read? A compassionate read? Informational?
  2. Structure your read.  Identify how the phrasing of the script is balanced over the entire spot.  At the sentence level, identify adverbs and adjectives that help you express the meaning of the script, and use them.
  3. Determine who your audience is, and then personalize it if you can. Perhaps pick someone you know who belongs to that group, and imagine presenting to them.
